Nepal Increases the Mount Everest Climbing Fee in 2025

Mount Everest, known as Sagarmatha in Nepal and Chomolungma in Tibetian, is the highest peak globally, with an elevation of 8,848.86 meters above sea level. It is located in the Himalayan range in the Khumbu region, the peak standing at the border between Nepal and Tibet, it has been a premier destination for climbers since Sir Edmund Hillary and Tenzing Norgay’s first climb in 1953.

In January 2025, the Nepalese government announced that every two mountaineers should hire a guide to climb any over 8,000 meters mountain, including Mount Everest, and increase the permit fees for climbing Mount Everest, marking the first hike in nearly a decade under the revised mountaineering regulations. However, the new cost does not yet apply for the upcoming spring season but only this rule is applicable beginning on September 1, 2025. The permit cost for foreign climbers from the south route in the spring (March to May) has been increased by 36% from $11000 to $15000 per climber.

In addition, the autumn season(September to November) climbing cost has been increased from USD 5500 to USD 7500. and winter season (December to February) has been increased from USD 2750 to USD 3750.

Furthermore, for the Nepali climbers, the spring season has doubled from Rs 75,000 to Rs, 150,000.

This climbing permit duration change the Nepalese government in 2025, a previously valid permit for 75 days, will now be limited to 55 days.

It is not yet known when the climbing permit fees for Nepal’s other 8,000 meters like Kangchenjunga, Manaslu, Makalu, Lhotse, Dhaulagiri, and Annapurna-I, will change, but they may also increase along with the price of Everest. Currently, trekkers pay permits cost $1,800 in spring, $900 in autumn, and $450 in monsoon and winter.
