Langtang Village Rebuilding After the 2015 Earthquake

Langtang Village (3430 m) was one of the hardest-hit areas during the 2015 earthquake in Nepal; sadly, a massive avalanche from Langtang Lirung buried the entire village under rock, ice, and snow.  The data shows that more than 300 lives were lost in the disaster, which included villagers, guides, and trekkers. The sad part was that centuries-old monasteries, mani walls, and stone houses disappeared within moments.

In the years that followed, the resilient Tamang people persisted and rebuilt their lodges and houses, creating the New Langtang Village, which is situated just below the older village. Reconstruction successfully preserved cultural heritage while introducing earthquake-resistant structures.

Today, the Langtang valley stands as a living reminder of resilience, recovery, and the enduring spirit of its people. Attracting trekkers who wish to witness both Himalayan beauty and human strength. You can pay tribute to the villagers, trekkers, and guides who lost their lives by visiting the Langtang Memorial Site, a small memorial area close to the location of the former village, during the Langtang Valley Trek.

Langtang Valley Trek immerses you in the Tamang Heritage

It is impossible to discuss Langtang Valley without mentioning the Tamang people. Since the traditional Talang people have lived in the stunning Langtang for many years, they are the ones who will serve you during your journey.

Get ready to get fully immersed in the Tamang culture while exploring traditional villages like Gatlang, Briddim, and Langtang, which showcase the local lifestyle. You will further witness the stone-built houses, wooden carvings, and mani walls which reflect the centuries-old Tamang and Tibetan influences.

While on your trip to Langtang, you will also visit Kyanjin Gompa (3870 m) and other smaller local monasteries, which are the centres of spiritual life.  And if you are at the right time, you can even experience the Tamang festivals, which give you deeper knowledge of local customs and rituals.

However, if there are no festivals when you are there, don't worry because you will still be able to engage with the local Tamang families, eat traditional foods, and get a firsthand look at Tamang life while staying at tea houses.

Yak Cheese Factory at Kyanjin Gompa

A fascinating aspect of the Langtang Valley Trek is the Kyanjin Gompa's traditional yak cheese factory. You can go to the nearby cheese factory to observe how the locals use traditional techniques to make yak milk cheese.

Furthermore, you have an opportunity to observe the full process of the yak making, from milking yaks to pressing and aging the cheese. This is a once-in-a-lifetime experience that will also make for an intriguing story.

For your information, the Tamang culture and high-altitude farming methods influenced by Tibet are reflected in these cheese-making traditions. The best part is tasting the fresh yak butter and cheese, which are uncommon Himalayan delicacies that are only found in the area.

While on your trek to Nepal, you can purchase directly from the local families, which will benefit them and help sustain the valley’s traditional livelihoods.

Reasons for Selecting the Langtang Valley Trek 8 Days

One of Nepal's top trekking routes, the Langtang Trek is a popular choice for tourists, following the Annapurna and Everest treks. Highlights of the trek include the traditional Tamang villages, spiritual monasteries, and a yak cheese factory, all of which are off the usual mountain trails.

Reaching the summits of Kyanjin Ri (4,773m) and Tserko Ri (5,000m), which offer breathtaking 360° views of Langtang Lirung (7,227m), Dorje Lakpa (6,966m), Shishapangma (8,027m, Tibet), Yala Peak (5,500m), and Ganesh Himal (7,422m). These snow-capped peaks offer unparalleled views.

Another reason why this Langtang trip might be ideal for you is that it is suitable for all groups of people, including families, friends, couples, children, and senior citizens. Compared to the more physically taxing and difficult Everest or Annapurna Treks, the Langtang Valley Trekking is less demanding.

You can spend more time alone with your loved ones, friends, or family on the less crowded trails in the Langtang region. This trek is the best way to experience the Nepali Himalayas because it is less crowded and simple to finish.

One of the best short treks in Nepal is Langtang, which can be reached in 8 days without the need for flights. Waste no more time because this is exactly the tour package that you have been waiting for.

Moreover, the luxury facilities are not found in the remote Langtang region, but things like hot showers, Wi-Fi, and charging are available for a few extra costs.

Guide and porter service

Where is the Langtang Valley?

The stunning and tranquil Langtang Valley is located in the Rasuwa District of the Langtang National Park in the north-central region of Nepal. It is located near the border with Tibet (China) and about 51 kilometres north of the capital, Kathmandu.

The drive from Kathmandu to Syabrubesi, the starting point of the Langtang Valley trek, takes 6 to 8 hours. This valley is in the centre of the Himalayas, surrounded by the peaks of Langtang Lirung, Gangchempo, and Dorje Lakpa.

Langtang, which is primarily home to Tamang communities, is a Buddhist and Tibetan-influenced place. The daily lives, monasteries, and infrastructures are all prime examples of Tibetan influence.

What are some ways to get ready for the Langtang Trek?

Similar to other treks in Nepal's Himalayan region, the Langtang Valley trek necessitates proper preparation for a trouble-free and successful journey. Fear not, as Mount Glory Treks, in collaboration with their team of knowledgeable Sherpa guides, has provided a list of preparation tips for a successful trek to Langtang Valley.

  • The first and most crucial preparation for a Himalayan journey is mental and physical health. It takes a great deal of mental and physical endurance to complete the difficult high-altitude trek.
  • It is also very important to pack everything you will need because you may forget to bring some essentials.
  • Selecting the appropriate travel companion is crucial because, in the absence of one, you may encounter unintended issues that will further complicate and complicate your journey.
  • Because this trek reaches a height of over 5000 metres, you should also have the appropriate travel insurance that covers medical emergencies and high-altitude rescue.
  • Due to the scarcity of ATMs on this trek, it is advised that you bring enough Nepali currency for your trip.
  • It's difficult to walk for five to six hours every day, so you should be prepared with snacks, water, and beverages to keep you energised.
  • You must bring your own prescription drugs and first aid kit, which should contain medications for common ailments like headaches, altitude sickness, diarrhoea, blisters, and stomachaches.
  • To avoid causing issues for other tourists or locals, make sure you respect the local way of life and adhere to eco-friendly practices.
  • For your mountain adventure to be successful, pick the appropriate time. It is advised that you speak with your travel companion prior to your arrival in Nepal.

How Can I Avoid Altitude Sickness During the 8-Day Langtang Trek?

Due to the low oxygen levels at high elevations, altitude sickness is a common issue that can arise above 2500 metres. Additionally, altitude sickness becomes an issue as the Langtang Trek reaches 3870 metres and side hikes surpass 5000 metres.

Common symptoms include headache, lightheadedness, nausea, loss of appetite, exhaustion, and sleep disturbances; these symptoms may worsen over time. But don't worry; we've included some altitude sickness prevention advice that you can use on your long trip.

Prevention tips :

  • Allow for adequate acclimatisation by descending gradually (rest day at Kyanjin Gompa).
  • Stay hydrated and avoid drinking alcohol or smoking.
  • Consume balanced meals that are high in calories.
  • Climb high, sleep low: take short hikes before descending to a lower elevation for slumber.
  • If you are prone to altitude sickness, take Diamox or any prescribed medication.
  • Recognise symptoms early and descend right away if they get worse.

Water, WiFi, and Electricity in the Langtang Area

Basic amenities like water, Wi-Fi, and charging are available in the remote Langtang region of Nepal, but they come at an extra cost. The majority of tea houses have electricity and charging stations that run on solar panels or micro hydropower. Additionally, the cost of charging phones is approximately NPR 150–300 per device, and it can increase to NPR 400 as you go higher.

For your convenience, it is also advised that you bring solar chargers and high-mAh power banks. WiFI is also offered by tea houses in Syabrubesi, Lama Hotel, Langtang Village, and Kyanjin Gompa, but the speed of the internet is slow and unreliable. Regarding the price, it ranges from NPR 200 to 500 per usage hour. Although the signal weakens outside of the Lama Hotel, the NTC and Ncell SIM cards do function in certain lower areas.

During the Langtang Valley Trek, bottled water can cost approximately NPR 100 to 150 per litre in lower villages, and it can cost up to NPR 200 to 300 per litre as you hike. Purchasing boiled water from tea houses, which costs between NPR 50 and 150 per refill, is a more affordable and environmentally friendly option.

Due to the lack of ATMs outside of Syabrubesi, you should also have enough Nepali rupees in cash for these kinds of expenses. Due to the inconsistent wifi, you should also download maps and music offline.

Temperature and weather of the Langtang Region

The Langtang region has four distinct seasons throughout the year, and the temperature varies depending on when you visit. Temperatures in the lower regions typically range from 10 to 20 degrees Celsius during the mild spring season, which runs from March to May. At higher elevations, the temperature may drop. In addition, you can observe the rhododendrons in bloom in the spring.

Similar to this, the summer/monsoon season, which lasts from June to August, is warm but primarily rainy, with average highs of 15 to 25 degrees Celsius. Along with natural disasters like landslides and floods, this season brings with it heavy rains and poor visibility. Trekking during the monsoon season is not recommended.

The autumn, which runs from September to November, is the best time of year for adventure and is also a great season for trekking. Clear skies and an average daytime temperature of 10 to 20 degrees Celsius are features of this season. At elevations above 3000 metres, the nights are still chilly.

The winter months of December through February are bitterly cold and covered in snow. During the day, the temperature drops to 5 to 10 degrees Celsius, and at higher elevations, it can drop to -10 degrees Celsius at night.

Since the weather in the mountains is unpredictable, it is advised to thoroughly check the forecast before making any plans and to pack sun protection, rain gear, and warm layers.

Travel Insurance

Before embarking on your adventurous trip to the remote area of Nepal, you need to have the right travel insurance. The insurance must cover emergency helicopter evacuation at the highest trek altitude.

When participating in adventurous activities like trekking, we suggest making sure your insurance covers unforeseen medical expenses.

Permits

The Trekkers' Information Management System (TIMS) card and the Langtang National Park Entry Permit are the two permits needed for the Langtang hike.

  • Langtang National Park Permit: 3000 NPR
  • Trekkers Information Management System: 2000 NPR

Note: Our Langtang Trek 8 Days package covers all permits, so hikers don't need to worry about them.

Tipping Culture in Nepal

Tipping is highly encouraged as a token of appreciation for the help your guides and porters provided you during your Nepalese Langtang Trek, though it is not necessary. Typically, tipping should equal at least 10% of the total cost of the trip. Tipping above the minimum amount needed for the trip is acceptable if you genuinely enjoyed the service.

Challenges in the Langtang Valley Trek

We’ve already talked about the difficulty level, choosing the wrong season, and confusion regarding the packing list. However, there are other challenges of the trek too:

  • Getting permits can be tricky and difficult, especially for first-time trekkers.
  • Even finding guides and porters all by yourself can be troublesome.
  • The final stretch to Tresko Ri is a high-altitude region, and ascending 1000 m in a single day poses a bit of risk.
