Island Peak (Imja Tse) Climbing Overview

Climbing a snowcapped mountain remains a dream for every trekker and aspiring mountaineer. However, not everyone is up for scaling the mountain giants, including Everest, Lhotse, Makalu, and Manaslu. For this reason, Mount Glory Treks presents the 15 days Island Peak Climbing, the perfect way to begin your mountaineering adventure in Nepal.

Located in the centre of the Khumbu region, Island Peak, also called Imja Tse (6,189 m), is one of Nepal's most visited climbing destinations. The mountain sits like an “island” in a sea of snow-capped mountains, surrounded by the Imja Glacier, which inspired its English name in 1951 by members of British mountaineer groups. But later in 1983, the Nepal Mountaineering Association (NMA) officially renamed it Imja Tse after the Imja Valley where it stands.

Island Peak has historically been used as a training ground for renowned expeditions, such as the first-ever Mount Everest expedition. Members of Sir Edmund Hillary and Tenzing Norgay's team used it for practice climbs in 1953 to hone their skills prior to their successful Mount Everest (8848.86 m) ascent.

The Alpine Island Peak Expedition provides a view of other giant mountains in the Everest region, including Makalu (8,485 m) rising prominently to the east, Baruntse (7,129 m) nearby, toward the Imja Valley, Lhotse (8,516 m) towering directly to the north, Nuptse (7,861 m), part of the Everest massif, seen with Lhotse, and Everest (8,848.86 m), visible in the distance on clear days.

The Island Peak climbing in Nepal swiftly starts after 30-35 minutes of serene Himalayan flight from Kathmandu to Lukla. After arriving in Lukla, your adventure to the Himalayas officially starts, continuing your hike to Phakding and then Namche Bazaar. After a day of acclimatizing in Namche Bazaar, your treks to the route of Imja Tse proceed, reaching Tengboche, Dingboche, and finally Chhukung, the getaway of your expedition.

Once you arrive at the immaculate Sherpa village of Chhukung, you take a break before the Island Peak Summit. You arrive at the Island Peak base camp the following day, where you can acclimatize and make the necessary preparations for your expedition. The following day, you formally ascend the magnificent Island Peak and get a firsthand look at the sea of mountains.

If you think you can embark on this ethereal mountain expedition of the historical expedition in Nepal, then the 15 days Island Peak Trek Package is perfect for you. Additionally, with more than a decade of experience in travel and adventure, Mount Glory Treks provides you with knowledgeable porters and Sherpa guides to help you at every stage of your trip.

As per your preference, if you are interested in adding the Everest Base Camp trek with the Island Peak Climb or shortening the expedition to 3 days starting from Chhukung, feel free to contact our operation team for more details.

Is Island Peak Climbing the perfect expedition for beginners?

Yes, Island Peak summit is one of the best expeditions for beginners as compared to other summits such as Mera Peak (6476 m), Lobuche East (6119 m), and Tent Peak (5695 m). The other mountain expedition in Nepal seems demanding and challenging. Nothing compares to the 360-degree panorama that climbers witness from the summit of Island Peak, which includes Everest, Lhotse, Makalu, Ama Dablam, Nuptse, and Baruntse.

Another pull factor of the snow-draped island peak is that the expedition and return to the base camp can be done in under a day, which gives more time for you to acclimatise properly. Other demanding climbing journeys in Nepal need more knowledge of the Himalayas.

The Imja Tse elevation strikes a balance between difficulty, accessibility, and breathtaking scenery for beginner climbers. Climbing to Island Peak offers the experience of being surrounded by the giants of the Khumbu region, making it a true training ground.

After the meeting you will be comfortably transported to your hotel in Thamel in a private vehicle. You have leisure time before the evening meeting where we will discuss your Himalayan expedition with our climbing guide.

After your breakfast at the hotel in Thamel. Our guide will pick you up from your stay for a flight to Lukla, which is full of beautiful landscape scenery. After nearly 30-35 minutes of flying above the serene hills and mountains of the Nepali Himalayas, you will reach the gateway of the Everest region. At Lukla you will meet your porter, who will help you with heavy backpacks during your Island Peak climbing.

You will have a brief relaxing time in the Lukla area before descending to the village of Phakding. The 3-4 hour trek is filled with rhododendron forests, suspension bridges, and serene rivers. Then you will stay at a comfy teahouse and rest for your trip tomorrow.

Note: During the peak season, March-April and October-November, the Lukla flight from Kathmandu is shifted to Manthali Airport, Ramechhap (a 5-hour drive from Kathmandu and a 15-minute flight to Lukla), as decided by the government for better management.

On this day of your 15-day Island Peak climbing itinerary, you will trek to the beautiful Sherpa settlement of Namche Bazaar at an elevation of 3,440 meters. You began your trek early in the morning after having a light breakfast at Phakding. We continue the journey to Monjo, where the Sagarmatha National Park checkpost is. After collecting the permits from Monjo, the journey offers rocky trails. You will walk along with the peaceful flowing rivers by your side.

After 4-5 hours of continuous hiking, you will finally reach the Sherpa town of Namche Bazaar, crossing the famous Hillary Bridge. The Namche Bazaar is the gateway to the Everest region, which offers clear views of neighboring snow-capped mountains, including the world’s highest peak, Mount Everest.

Today is a rest day during your Imja Tse expedition at the culture-rich village of Namche Bazaar. But we won’t let your day go to waste, as we have a perfect plan for your acclimatisation at Namche Bazaar. Today you will hike to the world’s highest altitude hotel, Hotel Everest View, in the Syangboche region, with an altitude of 3,880 meters. At this historical and Guinness World Record-holding hotel, you can enjoy your coffee looking at the parallel view of the giant Everest.

After leaving the Hotel Everest View, you can spend your free time at Namche Bazaar, which is full of local shops selling Tibetan crafts, Himalayan spices and dried fruits, yak products, and everything else you could want.

After breakfast, you will begin your Himalayan journey as you trek to Tengboche. You will ascend using the stone step trails across the panoramic mountain viewpoints.
Along the route you see small Sherpa settlements like Kyangjuma (3,570 m) and Phungi Thenga (3,250 m). Where the view of Ama Dablam dominates the skyline, and Phungi Thenga is a beautiful riverside village by the Dudh Koshi River.

It is a steep but scenic ascent through the forest; during the peak seasons, like spring, the route is filled with rhododendron, which makes the trail colourful. Then after 4-5 hours of your journey, you reach the spiritual Tengboche Monastery at 3867 m, which is the largest monastery in the Khumbu region. After a brief moment at the peaceful monastery, you will head to your lodge, where you will spend the night.

On this day you begin your trek to another stunning stage of your peak climbing journey. The early part of the trek passes through lush forest with Himalayan birdlife. As you ascend and descend in your Everest region trip, you will cross many suspension bridges, including one over the Imja Khola with dramatic views of rushing glacier waters.

After hours of continuous Himalayan trekking, you will reach the Pangboche village, which is one of the oldest Sherpa villages in the Khumbu region. You will also visit the famous Pangboche Monastery, which is said to have housed a yeti scalp and head.

And after a few hours' hike from Pangboche, you reach today’s destination, which is Dingboche, also known as the summer valley. Dingboche offers stunning views of Ama Dablam (6,812 m) and your ascending, Island Peak.

After spending a night at Dingboche, your trek to the next destination, Chhukum, begins early morning after breakfast. Along the way you will witness stone-walled fields and get close knowledge of how Sherpas adapted to farming in such high altitudes. The ascent from Chhukum also transitions the alpine landscape. The treeline ends completely from here, and as you trek higher, the route moves into open glacial valleys with rugged alpine scenery.

You will reach the Chhukhung Valley, which is one of the highest valleys in the world. Reaching Chhukhung (4,730 m), you can witness small settlements with teahouses. You will stay at a similar teahouse for the night.

The real Himalayan trek begins as you move further to the Island Peak Base Camp. The trails follow along the beautiful Imja Valley. You come across the Imja Khola, and it offers views of the Imja Glacier and Imja Tsho, which is a glacier lake in the region.

The trip offers challenges such as rocky paths, glacial moraines, and alpine scrubs, which make your adventure memorable. Then you reach your ultimate gate point of Imja Tse Island Peak base camp climbing, the Island Peak Base Camp at 5,100 m. You will spend your night in a comfortable private tent.

After days of continuous treks and hikes, on day 9, you will acclimatise at the Island Peak base camp. This is the time when you will learn in depth about your Imja Tse expedition and learn all the basics of mountaineering. It is necessary for acclimatisation of your body because mountain climbing is a challenging task.

Moreover, the guides will advise about the weather conditions; if conditions are bad, the expedition might be delayed.

This is the main day, as on day 10 you will finally summit the island peak. And after a week of hard work and continuous trekking through the Himalayas, you will be at the top of Imja Tse today.

You will wake up as early as 1 am in the morning for the reason that the weather is supportive during that time. Then you will begin your expedition, ascending way higher than the base camp. The trail tests your skills with rocky paths and steep slopes.

During the summit, your guide will fix the rope as needed and provide you with additional assistance. With the proper help from a trusted company, you will successfully complete your expedition.

You can take pictures and videos at the peak, after which you will descend and follow the same route home. You will spend the night at the Chhukung.

After eating breakfast and feeling rejuvenated, you will start your journey shortly after. Now the routes are similar, but you will trek with different feelings. You will descend gradually through the Sherpa villages.

After crossing Dingboche and Pangboche, you eventually reach Tengboche, which is where you will spend your night.

After breakfast you will descend to the Himalayan village Namche Bazaar with the stunning backdrop view of Mount Everest.

Along the way you will cross multiple suspension bridges and rivers before reaching Namche Bazaar for the night.

Today is the last day in the mountainous region, so for the memories, you will spend a brief moment in the area and capture your moments. You will continue your journey across the monjo and reach Lukla. Now that your beloved porter has completed his work upon your arrival in Lukla, it's time to bid him farewell with thanks and gratuities. You will spend a relaxing night at the lodge.

After breakfast you will have an early morning flight from Lukla back to Kathmandu. If everything goes smoothly without flight delays, you will reach Kathmandu early.

After arriving in Kathmandu, you will have your leisure day so you can rest or visit nearby places if you wish. You can buy souvenirs from the local Thamel market.

In the evening our company will arrange a farewell dinner at a typical Nepali restaurant nearby Thamel. At the same time, you will be given the trip completion certificate. We will also further discuss and receive feedback on your Island Peak climbing journey.

This marks the end of our 15 days Island Peak Climbing package. As per your scheduled flight, our company will pick you up from your hotel and drop you off at Tribhuvan International Airport, likely 3 hours before your flight.
