The Manaslu Tsum Valley Trek is a unique adventure that combines the traditional Manaslu Circuit with the spiritual Tsum Valley. It offers the best of both worlds, including remote Tibetan villages, hallowed monasteries, and a breathtaking alpine crossing over Larkya la Pass (5106 m).

The Manaslu Circuit Trek Route, which circles the eighth-tallest mountain in the world, is one of the favourite destinations for adventurers and high-altitude hikers. The Tsum Valley trek raises the bar for off-the-beaten-path hiking.

Additionally, the Manaslu Circuit with Tsum Valley Trek allows hikers to explore the Manaslu Restricted Area and the Tsum Valley Restricted Area. These are great examples of restricted area trekking in Nepal because they are both rarely visited and culturally intact.

A hidden gem in Nepal, the Tsum Valley and the Manaslu Trek are slowly attracting adventurous trekkers. For this reason, the 18-day Manaslu Tsum Valley Trek is a captivating destination following the popular treks like the EBC, ABC, and Langtang Valley treks.

This remote Himalayan adventure in Nepal takes you through historic Buddhist villages like Chumling, Chekampar, and the Nile. During this Mu Gompa trek, you can also visit Rachen Gompa to feel the peace of the Himalayas.

In the Tsum Valley, which lies between Nepal and China (Tibet), you can see the influence of Tibetan Buddhism in the local architecture, prayer wheels, mani walls, and chortens.

The challenging Larkya La Pass (5,106 m) crossing is one of the highlights of this 18-day Manaslu with Tsum Valley adventure.

Furthermore, the Larkya La Pass Trek is a strenuous but worthwhile climb that offers expansive mountain views before descending to Bimthang's verdant forests.

Trekkers can take in the breathtaking views of Manaslu (8,163 m), Himalchuli, Ngadi Chuli, Ganesh Himal, and Shringi Himal during this Circular Manaslu Trek with Tsum Valley.

What is unique about the Manaslu Tsum Valley Trek?

You may already know why the Manaslu Tsum Valley excursion is special after reading the description and highlights. However, let's take a closer look at why the 18-day trip to the Manaslu Circuit with Tsum Valley could be your next adventure.

The off-the-beaten-path experience that allows you to visit lesser-known parts of the Himalayas is one of the main highlights of this fusion trek.

Tsum Valley, a Beyul, which translates to "hidden Buddhist valley" in Tibetan, is home to centuries-old customs. Furthermore, the Manaslu and Tsum Valley are both restricted areas that need special permits in order to limit tourists and maintain authenticity.

In villages like Chumling, Chekampar, and Nile, you also have the chance to engage with the local Tibetan communities, which can provide you with a wealth of knowledge about life in remote villages.

This 18-day trekking itinerary, which combines a little bit of everything, fulfils all of your Himalayan adventures, from traversing the difficult Larkya La Pass (5106) to engaging in spiritual activities in Gompas to taking in breathtaking views of the mountains.

To put it briefly, the Manaslu Circle trek with Tsum Valley is a longer trip through the Manaslu region for those who enjoy mountain adventure in isolated and restricted areas.

Itinerary

The 18-day journey to the Manaslu Circuit via Tsum Valley starts with a lengthy but picturesque drive from the busy capital city to the peaceful Maccha Khola (930 m). Our guide will pick you up from your hotel early in the morning after breakfast, and you'll take the bus to your destination.

The Prithvi Highway and then the Budhi Gandaki River Valley are the routes. Additionally, you travel through the villages of Arughat and Soti Khola, which serve as the main entry points to the Manaslu Trek.

Views of verdant hills, terraced farms, and rural communities can be seen along the route. On clear days, you can also catch a glimpse of the Ganesh and Shringi Himal.

But before you reach Maccha Khola, be prepared for a final stretch of rough off-road terrain. After that, you will spend the night in a teahouse by the river.

On day two, your trek officially begins after a restful night's sleep and breakfast. You walk along the serene Budhi Gandaki River along a narrow, picturesque gorge trail. You pass the Tatopani, a natural hot spring that is a wonderful spot to unwind and rejuvenate, as you climb.

The trail includes stone steps, suspension bridges, and small waterfalls as it passes through the charming hillside farms of Khorlabesi and Doban, two small villages.

After a few hours of walking, you arrive at your destination for the day, Jagat (1,410 m). It is the entrance to the Manaslu Conservation Area and a traditional stone village where you can observe the blend of Gurung and Tibetan-influenced local culture.

Start your day with a leisurely ascent from Jagat via terraced hillsides and stone-paved trails, passing quaint Gorkha villages like Salleri and Philim. You will walk through the Manaslu Conservation Area, which is rich in biodiversity and birdlife.

Additionally, as you proceed, the path to Lokpa diverges northward from Philim, which serves as the entry point to the Tsum Valley. You will soon arrive at the serene mountain village of Lokpa (2,240 m), which is encircled by pine forests.

An overnight stay at a cosy teahouse in Lokpa signifies the start of your arduous journey and the entry into the holy Tsum Valley Region.

Day 4 of your trek starts with a descent through thick rhododendron and pine forests, which provide serene natural scenery. After that, you travel along the Syar Khola along a narrow, rocky trail that occasionally climbs and descends.

The first unobstructed views of the Manaslu Ranges, including the Baudha Himal (6,672 m) and Ganesh Himal (7,422 m), can be seen as you pass small towns. To get to Chumling, you must cross a number of suspension bridges before making one last, steep climb.

Additionally, you arrive at Chumling (2,386 m), where you can explore the village's historic Mani walls and Chumling Monastery. Spend the night with breathtaking views of the Ganesh Himal Range while savouring the local hospitality and organic cuisine in modest teahouses managed by amiable villagers.

Take a moderate walk in the pine and rhododendron forests that surround the Syar Khola valley to start your day. As you continue, you come across tiny communities like Tsum Valley hamlets, where you can get a glimpse of traditional Tibetan-style homes.

You arrive at Chekampar (3,010 m), also called Chhokang Paro, by walking the route that includes stone steps, river crossings, and occasionally steep sections. Located deep in the lower Tsum Valley, it is renowned for its traditional stone homes and welcoming residents.

As is customary for this 18-day trek to the Manaslu circuit, the day begins with a moderate climb that gradually leads into the heart of Upper Tsum Valley. You walk through isolated Tibetan-style villages and experience real Himalayan life along paths that are identical to those from previous days.

After hiking for almost six hours, you arrive at Nile (3,320 m), a charming village encircled by snow-capped peaks and alpine forests. Nile serves as a base for exploring nearby beauties, so it is where you will spend the night and acclimatise the next day.

You are aware of how crucial it is to acclimatise before continuing a high-altitude trek, which is why day seven at Nile is dedicated to this purpose. You walk to Mu Gompa (3,800 m), one of the most holy monasteries in Tsum Valley, during the day after getting enough sleep and eating.

You can take in the expansive views of the surrounding peaks and tranquil valleys during the round trip. At Mu Gompa, visitors can observe Tibetan Buddhist rituals and interact with monks.

Once you've had enough time in Mu Gompa, you head back to the 3,320-meter-high Nile to spend the night and recover for the remaining hikes.

You descend through pristine alpine landscapes this morning after a restorative acclimatising day, where you may see Himalayan wildlife and birds. Traditional barley and buckwheat terraces that demonstrate regional subsistence farming methods can be seen along the route.

You will be fascinated by the genuine Tsum Valley architecture, which features distinctive wooden carvings and stone homes. You will arrive at Chumling (2,386 m), where you can enjoy the peaceful ambiance far from the busy hiking routes.

After leaving behind the revered Tsum Valley, start your challenging trekking day with a slow descent through dense pine and rhododendron forests. The route offers breathtaking views and photo opportunities as you cross multiple suspension bridges over the roaring Budi Gandaki River.

Savour the contrast between the warmer, greener hillsides and the high mountain valleys. While travelling through charming hamlets with Tibetan and Gurung influences, you can stop for tea at Lokpa or Philim, which are well-known for their picturesque cliffside trails.

You arrive at Deng (1,860 m), a village tucked away by the river and renowned for its serene stone homes and views of the Shringi Himal (7,187 m), after about six to seven hours of walking.

On the tenth day of this trip, you will begin your ascent by following the Budi Gandaki upstream through the verdant forest trails. Prayer flags and mani walls will start to reappear as you pass through small settlements like Rana and Bihi.

The trail gradually ascends higher, bringing with it cooler air and breathtaking views of Manaslu and the Kutang Himal to the north. Following the peaceful walk through forests, you reach Namrung (2,630 m) after a final, steady climb.

The walk starts with a leisurely climb through pine forests after breakfast, with the views of the mountains growing more dramatic with each step. Beautiful chortens, barley terraces, and the stunning up-close views of Manaslu, Manaslu North, and Naike Peak can be seen while travelling through villages like Lihi and Sho.

Furthermore, as you approach the upper Nubri region, a stronghold of Tibetan Buddhist culture, the trail gradually opens out into a wide valley. Trekkers will have the ideal opportunity to take pictures as they cross small wooden bridges and streams that reflect the shimmering peaks.

You reach the beautiful highland village of Shyala (3500 m), which is encircled by enormous giants like Manaslu (8,163 m), Himal Chuli, Ngadi Chuli, and Ganesh Himal. In the evening, you can go to the nearby monastery and have tea with locals.

This day is ideal for exploring the upper Manaslu region because it is a short but picturesque trekking day. Along the Budhi Gandaki River, you will walk a leisurely trail with breathtaking views of the nearby peaks all around you.

You stop at the breathtaking Pungyeun Gompa Viewpoint. And as you get closer to Sama Gaun (3,530 m), one of the most picturesque villages in the area, it welcomes you with prayer flags.

After that, you can visit local cafes that serve Tibetan butter tea, explore the Sama Gaun Monastery, and engage with the locals.

Day 13 of your 18-day Manaslu Tsum Valley Trek itinerary is particularly noteworthy since it's the day you acclimatise to Sama Gaun and arrive at the Base Camp of the eighth-highest mountain in the world.

Along with taking in one of the most breathtaking hikes of the entire trek, you will spend the day acclimating to the thin mountain air. The trail leads up to breathtaking glacial moraines as it ascends from Sama Gaun through birch and rhododendron forests.

Enjoy panoramic views of the Manaslu range and glaciers cascading down into the valley. When you reach the 4,800-meter Manaslu Base Camp, you can get a closer look at the breathtaking views of snow ridges, icefalls, and the majestic face of Mount Manaslu.

After that, you spend the night in Sama Gaun, where you are greeted with cosy cuisine and the warmth of Teahouyse hospitality.

You begin today's trek with a leisurely ascent through alpine meadows and juniper forests with stunning views of the Manaslu massif and Samdo Peak after a restorative nap and a hearty breakfast.

Follow the path alongside the Budhi Gandaki River, passing through stone amni walls decorated with vibrant prayer flags and wooden bridges. Surprisingly, the route leads to desolate highlands that indicate the approach of the Tibetan border area.

Additionally, pause at picturesque locations along the way to get sweeping views of Syacha Glacier, Pangboche Himal, and Naike Peak. You will soon reach Samdo (3,875 m), a charming Tibetan refugee village rich in Buddhist culture and natural beauty.

The real Himalayan challenge begins today, when you begin a slow climb through rocky and desolate terrain, leaving behind Samdo, the last permanent settlement. With breathtaking views of the snow-capped mountains, you will proceed along the picturesque ridge.

Additionally, the trail climbs gently along the Larkya Glacier's lateral moraine, where blue sheep are frequently seen grazing on the slopes. As the air gets thinner and colder, take quick breaks at traditional stone huts or yak shelters.

You reach Dharmasala, also called Larkya Phedi (4,460 m), by traversing streams that are fed by melting glaciers and witnessing the change from alpine to arid highland scenery. Additionally, it is a small rest area that acts as the starting point for the difficult Larkya La Pass.

The evening will be spent relaxing and getting ready for the early pass crossing the following day. You will also need to hydrate and conserve energy.

The renowned Larkya La Pass (5,106 m), the highest and most difficult point of the Manaslu Tsum Valley Trek, will be crossed today, making it a difficult day. For this reason, you start your journey before the sun rises.

Trekking along the icy trails and rocky glacial moraines will allow you to see peaks like Manaslu, Cheo Himal, Kang Guru, and Himlung Himal as the first light appears.

Similar to this, the last ascent to the pass is gradual but strenuous, and when the prayer flags flutter at the top to signal your arrival at Larkya La, it's a rewarding moment with unparalleled expansive views.

Take in the breathtaking 360-degree Himalayan views, which include the striking views of Annapurna II and Pangi Himal on clear mornings. You then start a lengthy, steep descent in the direction of Bimthang (3,590 m). Which changes the trail from highlands covered in snow to verdant forests and alpine meadows.

After completing the Larkye La Pass Trek, arrive at Bimthang, a serene community encircled by towering peaks and pine forests, which is the perfect place to relax.

As your Manaslu Circuit Trek draws to a close, you start the day by descending from Bimthang, leaving the high alpine zone behind and entering verdant forests.

Follow the trail along the Dudh Khola River, enjoying the dramatic change in landscape from icy glacial surroundings to warmer, greener valleys. Additionally, catch the final glimpses of Himlung Himal, Phungi Himal, and Manaslu before they gradually disappear behind the hills.

As the route connects to the Annapurna Circuit Trek close to Dharapani, you will also witness the fusion of Gurung and Magar culture. You get a welcome change of pace from the rough terrain of earlier days as you cross the suspension bridges and tumbling waterfalls.

Your trekking adventure comes to an end when you arrive at Dharapani (1,963 m), a busy trail intersection where the Manaslu Circuit Trek meets the Annapurna region. Enjoy a leisurely evening in a cosy teahouse while commemorating the conclusion of your Manaslu Tsum Valley adventure with your team.

You will begin the day with a picturesque jeep ride from Dharapani to Besisahar, which will take you past waterfalls along the Marsyangdi River, small Gurung villages, and terraced farmland.

After arriving in Besisahar, you will travel on a smooth highway towards Kathmandu, passing through verdant hills, rivers, and scenes of rural Nepalese life. This drive provides you with one last look back at your amazing Manaslu Tsum Valley Trek experience.

By evening, you will reach Kathmandu, where you will be taken to your hotel, marking the official end of your journey.

Best Time to Trek the Manaslu Tsum Valley

The Manaslu Circuit trek is best completed in the autumn, from September to November, just like any other Himalayan trek. It is the most well-liked and reliable season for the Manaslu trek, with clear skies, dry trails, and stunning Himalayan views of Manaslu, Himlung, and Ngadi Chuli.

In a similar vein, spring is a great time to go on this trek. In March and May, the route is lush with verdant valleys and blooming rhododendrons, making the trek picturesque. At lower elevations, the temperature is pleasant, and at higher elevations, snow may linger.

Trekking in the Manaslu region may be difficult during the winter months of December through February. Larkya La Pass may be extremely dangerous to cross during this time due to the extremely cold weather and heavy snow above 4,000 metres.

Trekkers who enjoy solitude and have sufficient experience may give it a shot, but it's best to familiarise yourself with the route and your travel companion.

The monsoon season, which runs from June to August, is not advised because of the high rainfall, landslides, and slick roads. There are numerous issues with the trek route during the rainy season.

Additionally, the lack of lodges makes the isolated Manaslu region challenging and dangerous. For this reason, there probably aren't any treks to the Manaslu region during the rainy season.

                                      • Because this trek reaches a height of over 5000 metres, you should also have the appropriate travel insurance that covers medical emergencies and high-altitude rescue.
                                      • Because there are so few ATMs in the Manaslu region, it is advised that you bring enough Nepali currency for your trip.
                                      • It can be difficult to walk for five to six hours every day, so be prepared with drinks, water, and snacks to keep you refreshed.

How difficult is the 18-day Manaslu Tsum Valley Trek?

The Manaslu Circuit Trek is a high-altitude, moderate-to-challenging trek because of the sections like Larkya La Pass (5,106 m). Additionally, this strenuous 18-day trek is best suited for fit hikers with prior trekking experience and is typically not advised for novice hikers.

Trekking typically lasts four to seven hours a day, though some days are longer and involve steep climbs and descents. The diverse terrain of this trek, which includes rocky trails, suspension bridges, glacial moraines, alpine meadows, and forest paths, presents another difficulty.

To reduce the risk of altitude sickness during this high-altitude trek, our Manaslu Tsum Valley itinerary includes two acclimatisation days in Nile and Sama Gaun.

Expect minimal facilities above 3,500 metres, which can be challenging for novice hikers, as the remote Manaslu region has limited support due to the simple tea houses.

The high-altitude pass may be slick in snow or ice, but the technical difficulty of the trek is moderate, meaning no climbing equipment is required. Be ready with strong endurance and mental toughness.

How to prevent altitude sickness when hiking the Manaslu Circuit via Tsum Valley

Acute mountain sickness, also referred to as altitude sickness, can occur when people are not adequately adapted to a high altitude.

                                      Altitude sickness symptoms include:

                                      • Headache
                                      • Dizziness/light-headedness
                                      • Nausea or loss of appetite
                                      • Fatigue or difficulty sleeping
                                      • Shortness of breath while resting

The risk of altitude sickness is significantly increased when trekking at high altitudes, such as in the Manaslu region.

Our knowledgeable trekking guides and trip planners have provided the following tips to reduce the risk of altitude sickness for your reasonably priced Manaslu trek.

                                      • Acclimatisation days are included in the 18-day schedule to help you refuel.
                                      • It is recommended to sleep at lower elevations and hike to higher elevations.
                                      • To stay hydrated, avoid alcohol and caffeine and consume three to four litres of water each day.
                                      • Consume foods high in carbohydrates, like rice, noodles, and dal bhat, to fortify the body and immune system.
                                      • Even if you feel strong at the beginning of your journey, you should always take your time and not rush.
                                      • Talk to your doctor about acetazolamide (Diamox) to avoid the illness.
                                      • Symptoms like headaches, nausea, and dizziness should not be disregarded; if they worsen, take a nap or head downstairs.
                                      • Avoid exerting yourself, stay warm, and get enough sleep when it's cold outside.
                                      • Follow your directions and ask for help if you run into any problems.

Electricity, WiFi & Water during the Manaslu Circuit Trek with Tsum Valley

The Manaslu Region, which is situated in the isolated Himalayan region of Gorkha, has limited access to water, electricity, and Wi-Fi, but these facilities are extra. Charging devices, which range in price from $1 to $3 depending on altitude, are available at most tea houses and lodges along the Manaslu Trail. It is recommended to bring a power bank because the solar-powered devices may not be able to fully charge on cloudy days.

Furthermore, wifi is available at some lodges and usually costs between $2 and $4 per hour. Although it is slow, it works best for sending messages or emails. Life depends on water, and teahouses usually charge between $1 and $5 per litre for filtered and bottled water. For environmental and safety reasons, hikers should pack reusable water bottles.

The restricted Manaslu Region and the Tsum Valley require a guide, and you cannot travel without one. This 18-day trek package includes one knowledgeable guide for a group of eight people. To make your trip easier, we will provide an extra assistant guide if your group consists of more than eight people.

Because they are responsible for carrying your bulky bags and luggage, porters are essential to your mountain adventure. However, we have excluded Porter service in order to keep this 18-day journey to Manaslu Circuit reasonably priced.

Additionally, if you require the porter service, you can add it to the add-on section and hire a porter in the difficult Manaslu region for a small extra fee. To make your journey easier, we can arrange for a porter for two hikers who can transport up to 25 kg of luggage.

For your information, our packages cover the guides' travel insurance, food, lodging, and transportation.
