16 Day Manaslu Serang Gompa Trek Overview

The newly explored Manaslu Serang Gompa Trek, a unique extension of the Classic Manaslu Circuit Trek, provides a more unconventional and immersive Himalayan spiritual trekking experience than traditional trekking routes in Nepal.

Serang Monastery Trek, located in the restricted Manaslu Region, offers a quieter alternative to Everest and Annapurna, with fewer crowds and preserved culture.

The main highlight of this one-of-a-kind Manaslu package is a remote excursion to Serang Gompa, one of Nepal's least-visited monasteries, which adds a rare spiritual and cultural dimension.

You are provided with all of the major highlights of the Manaslu Circuit Trek while also combining the hidden monastery route to create a more exclusive trekking experience.

The 16-day restricted trekking route follows the tranquil Budhi Gandaki River Valley through Deeo Gorges, traditional villages, and high alpine landscapes, allowing you to experience authentic Himalayan life.

This trek is a great choice for culture seekers, as it has a strong Tibetan Buddhist influence in villages with ancient monasteries and lifestyles.

A well-planned and fully supported trekking itinerary, the Manaslu Serang Gompa Trek includes an acclimatisation hike to Manaslu Base Camp (4,800), which provides close glacier views and high-altitude exposure.

If reaching the foot of the eighth highest mountain in the world, Mount Manaslu (8,163 m), is not enough, you will also be crossing one of the most challenging high passes, the Larkya La Pass (5,106 m), which makes this journey both physically rewarding and scenically outstanding.

Mount Glory Treks has designed this fully supported 16-day Manaslu Serang Gompa Trek Itinerary that is perfect for people who are looking for real off-the-beaten-path treks in Nepal, remote experiences, restricted area trekking, and quieter alternatives to the popular Everest Base Camp Trek and Annapurna Circuit Trek.

Serang Gompa: Location, History, and Importance

The sacred Serang Gompa, located deep in the Upper Nubri Valley of the Manaslu Region, sits at approximately 4,130 m and is considered one of the most isolated Buddhist monasteries in the entire Manaslu trekking corridor.

It is thought to have originated as a remote meditation retreat for Tibetan Buddhist monks practicing advanced Vajrayana traditions, where isolation and high-altitude silence were regarded as necessary for spiritual discipline and enlightenment.

Unlike major monasteries in village centres, Serang Gompa was purposefully built in a secluded alpine setting surrounded by rugged cliffs and Himalayan peaks, reflecting the tradition of hermit-style monastic life in the Himalaya.

The monastery is significant culturally and spiritually for local Nubri communities, who regard it as a sacred site associated with protection rituals, seasonal blessings, and Buddhist teachings handed down through generations.

Serang Gompa is gaining popularity in Manaslu trekking and Nepal's off-the-beaten-path routes, particularly as part of the extended Manaslu Circuit Trek.

For modern trekkers, it represents a unique combination of high-altitude monastery trekking, cultural immersion, and spiritual solitude, making it one of the most significant hidden gems in the Manaslu region.

Can I add the Tsum Valley Trek to the Manaslu Serang Gompa Trek?

Yes, it is possible to combine the Tsum Valley Trek and the Manaslu Serang Gompa Trek, and it is one of the most rewarding combinations in the entire Manaslu region. Both routes are located in the restricted Manaslu Region and can be combined depending on your time, fitness level, and trekking preferences.

Itinerary

When you arrive in Kathmandu, the Manaslu Serang Gompa Trek officially begins. Travellers are greeted upon arrival and taken to their hotel in Thamel, the city's primary tourist destination. After checking in, there is time to relax and unwind after the journey.

In the free time, a short trek briefing is usually held, during which important details about the route, permits, preparation, and upcoming travel plans are discussed. This day is primarily about relaxation and final preparations before beginning the trek into the Manaslu region.

On Day 2, the journey begins with a scenic drive from Kathmandu to Machhe Khola (870m), signalling the shift from city life to the remote Himalayan region. The route takes you through winding highways, river valleys, terraced hillsides, and small rural settlements, giving you a glimpse of Nepal's countryside.

As the journey progresses, the road becomes more rugged, reflecting the natural terrain of the Manaslu area. When travellers arrive at Machhe Khola, they settle into a local teahouse or lodge to rest and prepare for the trekking days ahead in a peaceful riverside setting.

This day leads you deeper into the Manaslu region as the trail gradually ascends from Machhe Khola to Jagat (1,350m), following the rugged course of the Budhi Gandaki River. The walk begins on gentle riverside paths that gradually become steeper ascents, crossing suspension bridges and passing through small hillside villages surrounded by terraced fields and forested slopes. Along the way, waterfalls and narrow gorges add drama to the journey, reflecting the region's raw beauty.

As you approach Jagat, the landscape becomes more remote and traditional, with stone-paved paths leading into the village, where trekkers can rest in a teahouse before continuing into the restricted Manaslu area.

The trail from Jagat to Deng (1,860m) follows a series of narrow paths, forest sections, and river crossings along the Budhi Gandaki. The walk is a series of ups and downs, passing through small settlements and gradually entering a more remote, less populated landscape. Higher up, the atmosphere starts to feel more silent and rougher. Deng itself is a small village on the river, a simple stopover before continuing on into the higher Manaslu area.

Today you depart on the way to Kwak Village (3,200m). A real step up from the past days. The trail is not rushed, gradually gaining altitude so you can acclimatise, but you’ll certainly feel the altitude gain by the end.

With fewer villages, the path becomes quieter, and the surroundings begin to open up, revealing wider views and less dense vegetation. Along the way, you'll notice small signs of local life and culture without feeling crowded or rushed.

Arriving at Kwak, the air is cooler and thinner, and it's the kind of place where you naturally slow down, rest well, and prepare yourself for the days ahead.

This is one of the most rewarding days of the trek, as you travel from Kwak Village to Serang Gomba (4,130 metres). The trail climbs steadily, with the landscape becoming more open and raw, and the views expanding with each step. You will notice that the surroundings are quieter and more isolated, with fewer signs of settlement along the way.

As you approach, the monastery appears almost unexpectedly, nestled in a peaceful high-altitude setting. Reaching Serang Gomba feels unique—not only because of the altitude, but also because of the peaceful atmosphere and spiritual presence that define the area.

After breakfast, you'll start your trek early, and the day will be spent descending towards Ghap (2,500m). The trail gradually descends, and you will notice the difference almost immediately as the air thickens and walking becomes easier.

The path descends through quieter areas, gradually restoring greenery and signs of village life. By the time you arrive at Ghap, the lower altitude feels refreshing, making it an ideal place to rest after the high elevation.

After the lower sections, the trail to Shyala (3,500m) gradually gets you back into higher ground. It’s a steady uphill day, not rushed, more about finding your rhythm. The scenery gradually opens up, and by the time you reach Shyala, you are surrounded by wide views and a more open valley setting. It’s a nice change from the more crowded trails earlier, a place that feels open and peaceful.

This section of the walk is more open and relaxed, with the trail gently stretching across a wide valley rather than constantly pushing uphill. From Pungen on the way to Sama Gau, you get closer views of the glacier side, which is a more raw and high-altitude experience without making the day too exhausting.

It’s still big and quiet out here, and as Sama Gau appears, it feels more like a mountain village than just a place on the way.

Today is a more relaxed day, a flexible day, centred around Sama Gau, allowing your body time to adjust, but still keeping active. A lot of people take a trek to Manaslu Base Camp (4,800m).

It’s a gradual climb, and the mountain views are superb – the higher you go, the better they get. It’s not about running to the top; it’s just going as far as you’re comfortable and coming back.

You’ve earned the rest of the day to spend wandering around the village, whether resting, exploring or just soaking in the surroundings.

You will walk to Samdo Village (3,860m), which is shorter and more gradual, so it feels like a lighter day. As you climb, the trail is pretty open with wide views of the valley and a steady but easy pace. The trail feels remote and quiet, and when you arrive at Samdo, the village lies in a stark, high-altitude world that feels near the borderlands. It's a good place to slow down, rest, and enjoy the surroundings.

This is a short but very high day, from Samdo to Dharmasala (4460m). The trail is short, but it immediately feels different because it's colder, more exposed, and reduced to untainted mountain terrain. With minimal vegetation and expansive vistas that resemble the upper wilderness, the route has a serene, almost desolate atmosphere. Simple and practical, Dharmasala serves more as a stopover than a village where hikers rest and get ready for the next major obstacle.

The journey's most difficult and pivotal day is today, day 13, when we cross the peak at Larky La (5,106m) before descending towards Bhimthang (3,700m). The morning begins early with a gradual ascent into a hostile, high-altitude environment where the air is thin, and the terrain gets harder with each step.

Getting to the pass itself is an achievement, and the effort is rewarded with spectacular Himalayan views. From there, it drops steeply into a completely different landscape, gradually re-establishing the vegetation, warmer air, and softer ground. The scenery is a dramatic contrast by the time you reach Bhimthang, making it a memorable turning point of the trek.

Leaving the high alpine world behind, the trail from Bhimthang to Gowa (2,550m) is a slow descent back to life and green. With every step downwards, the way softens underfoot again. Forests recur, valleys deepen, and the air gets perceptibly warmer.

We begin to see small clearings and scattered settlements again, making the walk feel more lived-in than the higher parts. Arriving in Gowa, the surroundings are calm and welcoming, a comfortable valley stop to rest after the long drop from the mountains.

The trek’s final day starts with a gentle walk from Gowa to Tilche (2,260m), through easier terrain as the trail gradually reconnects to road access. From Tilche, we drive through winding mountain roads, following rivers, hillsides, and small settlements on our descent towards Besisahar (900m).

The trek ends at the roadhead, and from there it is back to Kathmandu or Pokhara. It’s a long but comfortable transition back to city life from the remote mountain trails, with time to reflect on the journey.

The journey ends on Day 16 with departure. Following breakfast, our team will assist you with final arrangements and transfer you to the airport for your next flight, ensuring a smooth and hassle-free departure. If you plan to stay in Nepal, we can arrange for a transfer to your hotel in Kathmandu or Pokhara.

This concludes the trek, leaving you with lasting memories of the Himalayas, remote trails, and unique cultural experiences.

                                  Useful Information

                                  Serang Gompa Trek Difficulty

The 16-day Manaslu Circuit Trek with Serang Gompa is classified as a moderate to difficult high-altitude trek in Nepal due to its remote trails, long walking days, and significant elevation gain. It is more difficult than standard commercial treks because it combines the classic Manaslu route with the remote Serang Gompa section, which necessitates good fitness and acclimatisation.

                                  • High-altitude trekking (up to 5,106m): The most challenging part is crossing Larkya La Pass, where thin air, cold conditions, and steep ascents make the climb physically intense.
                                  • Extended time above 4,000 m: Multiple days at high elevation, including visits to Serang Gompa and Manaslu Base Camp, increase the risk of altitude fatigue.
                                  • Remote and rugged terrain: The Serang Gompa section features less-developed trails, uneven paths, and minimal facilities when compared to mainstream trekking routes in the Manaslu Region.
                                  • Long trekking days: Expect 6-8 hours of walking daily through river valleys, forest trails, and steep mountain sections.
                                  • Weather and altitude sensitivity: Conditions can change quickly in higher zones, especially near Serang Gompa and Larkya La, necessitating proper equipment and preparation.

How to Prepare for the Manaslu Serang Gompa Trek in Nepal?

The trek to Serang Gompa is a remote and high-altitude Himalayan journey in the Manaslu Region, so proper planning is required for a safe and enjoyable experience. Trekkers should be physically, mentally, and logistically prepared for the route, which includes the isolated Serang Gompa section and high passes such as Larkya La Pass.

                                  • Build physical and mental fitness: Train with regular cardio, hiking, and stamina exercises, as the trek requires long days and high-altitude walking above 4,000 metres.
                                  • Pack smart and essential gear: Carry proper trekking clothing, layered warm gear, and essentials because facilities are limited in remote areas such as Serang Gompa.
                                  • Prepare for altitude challenges: The route reaches extreme elevations, including visits near Manaslu Base Camp, so acclimatisation and a slow pace are important.
                                  • Get proper travel insurance: High-altitude trekking insurance that covers evacuation and medical emergencies is highly recommended.
                                  • Carry enough local currency: ATMs are very limited in the region, so Nepali cash is needed for personal expenses on the trail.
                                  • Stay hydrated and energised: Bring water bottles, purification methods, and light snacks for long treks.
                                  • Respect local culture and environment: As the trail passes through traditional Buddhist villages in the Manaslu region, eco-friendly trekking and cultural respect are essential.
                                  • Select the appropriate trekking season: Spring and autumn provide the best weather conditions for visibility, safety, and comfortable trekking.
                                  • Carry basic medical supplies: Altitude sickness medication, pain relief, bandages, and personal first aid items for remote trail conditions.

Best Time for the Manaslu Sernag Monastery Trek

The Best Time for the Manaslu Serang Gompa Trek is in the spring (March to May) and autumn (September to November), when the weather in the Manaslu Region is most stable and the trekking conditions are ideal.

The spring season brings clear skies, moderate temperatures, and blooming rhododendron forests along the lower trails, while higher sections near Serang Gompa provide crisp mountain views and comfortable trekking conditions.

Autumn is considered the peak trekking season, with dry weather, excellent visibility, and panoramic Himalayan views, especially around Larkya La Pass.

Winter can be extremely cold with heavy snow at higher elevations, making passes difficult, while the monsoon season brings rain, slippery trails, and limited visibility, which is why these seasons are avoided during the Serang Gompa trek.

                                  Accomodation

This Manaslu Serang Gompa Trek takes you deep into the remote Himalayan terrain of the Manaslu Region, where lodging is simple, local, and experience-driven rather than luxury-oriented. Before and after the trek, the package includes cosy stays in three-star hotels in Kathmandu with contemporary amenities.

You will stay in well-run teahouses and local lodges along the trail during the trekking days; these accommodations are typically twin or triple-sharing. These teahouses offer a cosy and welcoming atmosphere in the mountains with basic amenities like beds, blankets, and meals.

Accommodations become more scarce and basic as you climb higher, particularly towards isolated areas like Serang Gompa. In lower villages, amenities like hot showers, WiFi, charging, and hot water are available, but at higher elevations, they become more scarce and might cost extra.

                                  Food

The food served during the 16-day Manaslu Gompa Trek is straightforward, satisfying, and made to accommodate trekking at high altitudes in the isolated Manaslu Region. The package includes three meals per day: breakfast, lunch, and dinner, all served at local teahouses along the way.

You can expect a variety of Nepali, Tibetan, and basic international dishes such as:

                                  • Dal Bhat Tarkari
                                  • Tibetan bread, chapati, and roti
                                  • Thukpa, noodle soup, and garlic soup
                                  • MoMo
                                  • Fried rice, pasta, spaghetti, and noodles
                                  • Pancakes, porridge, muesli, and eggs
                                  • Toast with butter, jam, or honey
                                  • Potato dishes like boiled, fried, or curry

As you ascend to the remote areas, food options become more limited, but meals remain warm and energy-rich.

Note: Any additional food, snacks, or beverages such as soft drinks, bottled water, tea, coffee, and chocolates are not included in the package and must be purchased separately by trekkers. Carrying energy bars, nuts, or dried fruits is highly recommended for extra energy on long treks.

The Serang Gompa Trek requires several permits as the route lies in a restricted and conservation-managed area of the Manaslu Region. These permits control access, protect the environment, and aid local communities.

                                  Manaslu Restricted Area Permit:

                                  • A licensed guide through a registered trekking agency is mandatory.
                                  • In this region, independent trekking is not allowed.

Altitude Sickness During the Manaslu Serang Gompa Trekking in Nepal

The high-altitude Serang Gompa Trek reaches elevations above 5,000 metres, particularly near Larkya La Pass, making altitude sickness (AMS) a major concern in the Manaslu region. Proper acclimatisation and awareness are required for a safe trekking experience.

                                  Common Symptoms of Altitude Sickness:

                                  • Headache
                                  • Dizziness or light-headedness
                                  • Nausea or loss of appetite
                                  • Fatigue and poor sleep
                                  • Shortness of breath even at rest

                                  Prevention Tips:

                                  • Follow proper acclimatisation: The itinerary includes rest days and gradual altitude gain, particularly before higher sections like Serang Gompa and Larkya La.
                                  • Climb high, sleep low: Take short hikes to higher elevations and then return to sleep at a lower altitude to help your body adjust.
                                  • Stay hydrated: Drink 3-4 litres of water per day and avoid alcohol or smoking at higher elevations.
                                  • Eat high-energy meals: Focus on carbohydrate-rich foods like dal bhat, rice, potatoes, and soups to sustain energy.
                                  • Maintain a steady pace: Avoid rushing; slow and consistent walking reduces stress on your body.
                                  • Consider preventive medication: Consult a doctor about medicines like Diamox before the trip.
                                  • Listen to your body: Never ignore symptoms; if they worsen, descend immediately and notify your guide.
                                  • Stay warm and well-rested: Cold and fatigue can increase AMS risk, so proper layering and sleep are essential.
                                  • Trek with experienced guides: Professional support ensures better decision-making and emergency management in remote areas.

Travel Tips Before Embarking on the Manaslu Region

The Manaslu Serang Gompa Trek passes through remote Himalayan terrain in the high-altitude region. So, facilities like electricity, internet and water are limited and become basic as you gain altitude.

                                  Electricity & Charging:

Most teahouses have charging facilities, mainly powered by solar energy. It costs 1 to 3 USD to charge each device, and it increases with altitude. Charging might not be reliable at higher altitudes or in cloudy weather, so you should bring a power bank with you.

                                  WiFi & Network:

Some lower and mid-altitude villages have WiFi, usually at USD 2 to 5. The connection is slow and mostly good for basic messaging. In remote areas, mobile network coverage is limited and often not available.

                                  Drinking Water:

Bottled and filtered water is available in teahouses at prices between USD 1 and 5 per litre, depending on altitude. Carrying a reusable bottle with purification tablets or a filter is highly recommended to reduce cost and plastic waste

                                  ATMs & Cash:

There are no reliable ATMs available on the trekking route after the main towns. You should bring enough Nepalese rupees from Kathmandu to cover personal costs such as drinks, snacks, charging, Wi-Fi, and showers.

                                  Additional Expenses:

This package does not include services like hot showers, extra meals, beverages, and device charging, which must be paid separately during the trek.

                                  Airport Pickup and Drop-Off Service

All major transfers in the Manaslu Serang Gompa Trek package are fully organised, ensuring a smooth travel experience from arrival to departure.

Our team will pick you up from Tribhuvan International Airport in Kathmandu and transfer you to your hotel. This service is included in the majority of our trekking packages, including the Manaslu Serang Gompa Trek, Manaslu Circuit Trek, and Manaslu Tsum Valley Trek.

Before the trek, we arrange for overland transportation from Kathmandu to the trailhead in the Manaslu region. Following the trek, you will be driven from the exit point to Kathmandu and dropped off at your hotel.

Finally, on your departure day, we provide hotel pickup and airport transfer to Tribhuvan International Airport, ensuring a smooth conclusion to your Nepal trekking trip.

Guide and Porter During the Trek

Trekking in the restricted Manaslu Region, including remote sections such as Serang Gompa, requires a licensed guide; independent trekking is not permitted.

This package includes an experienced trekking guide for small groups, with an assistant guide available for larger groups as needed. Our guides are extensively trained in navigation, local culture, and high-altitude safety, resulting in a smoother and safer trekking experience.

                                  • The trail is moderately to challenging in places, particularly because of the remote trails and high-altitude sections. It is more difficult than standard commercial treks because of the Serang Gompa route and the Larkya La Pass crossing. This walk is a worthwhile step up if you prefer more sedate routes with a little more physical difficulty.

                                  • While it's not strictly necessary, prior trekking experience can be very beneficial. Even fit beginners can easily complete the trek with the right preparation, a steady pace, and direction from knowledgeable leaders. Your trip will go much more smoothly if you prepare ahead of time and have a basic understanding of altitude.

                                  • Trekking alone is not allowed because this route is located in the restricted Manaslu Region. On the other hand, you can easily organise a private trip with a licenced guide or join a group, which frequently improves both safety and cultural experience. But the latest government rule in 2026 allows all restricted areas for solo travelers.

                                  • Depending on side trips and acclimatisation days, most itineraries last two to three weeks. It's crucial to give yourself enough time so that your body can acclimatise to the altitude and you can fully appreciate the far-off scenery without hurrying.

Keeping hydrated, adhering to a well-planned schedule, and being aware of early symptoms can all have a significant impact. An additional degree of security is added when trekking with knowledgeable guides.

                                  • Several permits are needed for this trek, including conservation and restricted area permits. If you book a package, your trekking agency will usually arrange these, saving you the trouble.

                                  • With clear skies, consistent weather, and improved visibility of the mountains, spring and autumn are typically the most dependable seasons. Selecting the ideal time of year can significantly improve trekking safety and enjoyment.

                                  • Yes, there is a lot of flexibility in this trek. In order to create a more varied and culturally rich Himalayan experience, many hikers decide to extend their journey by combining it with routes like Tsum Valley.
