Bhairav Kunda Trek is an adventurous journey to the unspoiled part of the Himalayas near the Nepal-Tibet border in the Langtang Region. The newly opened trek to the high-altitude lake, Bhairav Kunda, holds significant religious importance to Hindus, Buddhists, and Shamans. The trek to Bhairav Kunda takes you to an off-the-beaten-path with the limited settlement, giving you an authentic experience of a camping trek in Nepal. You will be amused by the culture of the Tamang, Sherpa, and a few Newari, Brahmin, and Chettri communities as you make your way to the holy lake and other Tibetan glaciers. Trekking to Bhairav Kunda offers the experience of walking on the unspoiled and tranquil trail with breathtaking landscapes and Himalayan views. 

The 9-night 10-day camping trek to Bhairav Kunda starts with a drive to the Jalbire, near the Tibetan border. The journey takes you through steep trails, lush green forests, and enchanting villages like Khani Gaon, Forest Camp, Pati, Sherpa Gaun, and other small settlements. As you trek along the holy site, you will be rewarded with majestic views of the Himalayan Peaks like Madiya, Phurbi Ghhyachu Dorje Lakpa, and Jugal Himal.  The main highlight is the Bhairav Kunda, a beautiful lake with crystal clear water, with the holy temple nestled in the breathtaking surroundings enchanted by the spiritual realm. Every year on the full moon in August, hundreds of devotees visit this abode to take a holy bath and wash away their sins. 

Bhariva Kunda is one of the virgin destinations in Nepal, that takes you to the surreal and isolated part that offers you natural beauty while you go to the spiritual abode. As you camp along the trail, you get to rest under the open night sky while our team serves you a nutritious meal. The warm hospitality of the locals along the way will make this trek a perfect destination for those who want to travel away from the mainstream destination of Nepal. 

Itinerary

Early breakfast at the hotel. 

Then begin your drive to Jalbire. The drive takes you to the northeast near the Tibetan border, once the trade route to Tibet, in the Banepali Valley. 

The drive offers a scenic view of local villages and hills and a glimpse of the Himalayan peaks as you drive along some rough and bumpy highways. 

Once you arrive at Jalbire, our crew members will start arranging tents for your first day of camping. Jalbire is a small yet picturesque village home to the Newari community at the bank of the Banepali River. If interested, you can visit a nearby temple dedicated to Lord Bishnu.

Following breakfast, commence your trek. 

The trek takes you through a lush green forest with some ascends and descends. Along the way, you pass along a captivating waterfall. 

En route, our crew members will be waiting for you to serve a fresh hot lunch. After fulfilling lunch commence your trek where you pass along Tamang villages leading you to Chanaute, an enchanting village inhabited by Chhetri and Brahmin communities.

Once you reach Chanaute, your tents are already set up ready for you to spend the night and enjoy the meals.

Following breakfast, begin walking along a steep path. The trail leads you through small villages and terrace farms while you also get to rejuvenate along the lush green forest. 

With a path mostly uphill along a steep trail, your journey ends at Khani Gaun, an enchanting Newar village. It is believed that the Newari from Bhaktapur fled to this area as the war broke out between Gorkha and Bhaktapur around the mid-18th century.

The trail today leads you through a less settlement area. The path takes you through a steep ascend and into the enchanting rhododendron forest. Along the way, you may witness grazing pasture and humble huts for cattle. 

If lucky, you may also witness birds and wildlife. After tackling some challenging sections, you will eventually arrive at Forest Camp.

After breakfast, begin your trek to Pati. Pati nestles a rest house constructed for the pilgrims. These accommodations cater specifically to those who embark on a holy pilgrimage to Bhairav Kund, adhering to auspicious timings according to the Hindu calendar.

Your journey to Pati continues through the captivating sights of pine and rhododendron forests. However, the trial is demanding with steep uphill hikes. Once you reach Pati, you will be rewarded with awe-inspiring mountain vistas.

The following breakfast, today, trek to the ultimate destination, Bhairav Kund. The trail leads you uphill to Kunda to the ridgeline of the hill. The path leads you to a less vegetation area, only covered with green grasses and mostly rocky terrain. Making your way through rocky terrain, you meet the cemented staircase guiding you to the Lake. Along the way, you can see Yak grazing along. 

Once you reach the top of the hill along the staircase, you can see Bhairav Kunda below, surrounded by rocky hills. 

Upon arrival, spend some time exploring the lakeside. You can also visit the temple dedicated to Lord Shiva.

Wake up early for the mesmerizing sunrise view as you enjoy breakfast.

Today explore the area. Bhairav Kunda holds significant importance to the Hindus, Buddhists, and Shamans. Kunda refers to the lake. Many pilgrims visit this holy site during the full moon that falls during August to take a holy dip believing all their sins will wash away. The place is believed to be the abode of Bhairav, the destructive form of Lord Shiva. 

Hike to the nearby hill offering breathtaking views of the surroundings including the Himalayan Vista like  Madiya, Phurbi Ghhyachu Dorje Lakpa, and Jugal Himal.

The sunset view from here is simply spectacular.

Retrace your trail through the stairways. The path diverts east as you make your way downhill to Sherpa Gaun. As the name implies, Sherpa gaun is an inhabitant of the Sherpa communities.

On the final day of the trek, make your way downhill to Larcha. The path takes you through Bhote Koshi. 

Once you reach Larch, you can leave your baggage to make a short 30-minute walk to Tatopani, a natural hot spring to soak your body to relax after a long day's trek, a perfect way to end the trekking journey.

Larcha was also one of the most affected areas during the 2015 earthquake.

Following breakfast, concluding the trek drive back to Kathmandu. Drive along the Nepal - Tibet highway enjoying the scenic view along the way. 

Once you arrive in Kathmandu, check in to the hotel, the remaining evening is yours to relax and unwind at leisure.

Accommodation and Facilities During Bhairav Kunda Trekking:

Bhairav Kunda Trek is a camping trek as accommodation along the trail is extremely limited. Therefore, it is essential to bring all necessary items with you, which our team of porters will handle. They will carry your food, luggage, and tents. We will arrange all the tents for you so you do not have to buy sleeping bags and sleeping tents unless you want to. We also provide dining tents, kitchen tents, and washroom tents. 

Our trained crew members will prepare three meals a day, offering a variety of dishes to ensure you receive proper nutrition throughout the trek. It is advisable to bring solar chargers and backups to keep your electronic devices functional. 

 

Who can join the Bhairav Kunda trek?

Bhairav Kunda Trek is a moderate trek.

The challenging part of the trek is steep ascend and descent. So make sure you are physically and mentally prepared. 

If you are active in day-to-day life, then regular exercise will do. We recommend cardio exercises that include running, cycling, and swimming. Also, if you have joint and respiratory issues, consult with the doctor before joining the trek. 

Altitude is usually not the main issue. However, you have to make sure that you are aware of your body and keep your guide updated on your health since you will be trekking up to 4,000 m. 
  

Guide & Potters for the Bhairav Kunda Trek:

It is compulsory to hire a guide during trekking in Nepal. 

Since this is a camping trek, you will be accompanied by potters and other members who will carry and arrange all the camping gear and your baggage. 

While the guide assists you in steering the trail while keeping in sight of the surroundings, the other crew members arrange the tents at the proper location for you to rest and provide nutritious meals. 

.With local friends, you will have an enjoyable and memorable journey during the Bhairav Kunda Trek. 

 


Safety and Security During 10 Days Bhairav Kunda  Camping Trekking:

For your safety, you will be accompanied by experienced guides and friendly porters throughout the trek.

The trail is relatively moderate to follow, but it is crucial to maintain communication with the crew, particularly the guide. Our local porters and staff members walk at a brisk pace to ensure everything is prepared before your arrival. To fully enjoy the trek, it is advised to prepare yourself physically and mentally, ensuring you are in good fitness. 

Further, you will encounter friendly locals, and maybe pilgrims along the way showing you kind hospitality and gestures. 
Staying hydrated by carrying enough fluids is essential. We highly recommend obtaining travel insurance.
