How to prepare for the 12-Days Everest Base Camp Trek?

Preparing for the 12-Day Everest Base Camp Trek is essential to ensuring safe, pleasurable, and successful adventures to the world's highest mountain. Although it's a moderate-to-difficult journey, most fit trekkers can accomplish it with confidence if they prepare physically, bring the right gear, and have the right mindset.

Physical Fitness Preparation

Fitness is essential when preparing for the 12-Day Everest Base Camp Trek. You'll be walking for 5 to 7 hours every day at heights of up to 5,545 meters (Kala Patthar). The absence of oxygen at high elevations can make the climb feel much more difficult than a typical hike.

To prepare

  • Begin cardio exercises such as jogging, hiking with elevation, stair climbing, or cycling at least 2-3 months in advance.
  • Include strength exercises for your legs, back, and core, such as squats, lunges, and deadlifts, to improve endurance.
  • Take long-distance excursions with your backpack and footwear to imitate actual hiking conditions.
  • If possible, train at high altitude or with a high-altitude training mask to gradually adjust to low oxygen levels.

Acclimatization and AMS Prevention

Acclimatization is essential when trekking in the Himalayas. As you climb above 3,000 meters, the air thins, making breathing difficult and raising the risk of Acute Mountain Sickness (AMS).
Follow these tips:

  • Stick with the conventional route, which includes acclimatization days at Namche Bazaar (3,440m) and Dingboche (4,410m).
  • Walk gently, stay hydrated (3-4 liters each day), and avoid drinking and smoking.
  • Learn to detect the following AMS symptoms: headache, dizziness, fatigue, nausea, and lack of appetite.
  • Always listen to your body and notify your guide if your symptoms worsen—descent is the best solution.
  • A well-paced hike, paired with proper hydration and nutrition, is essential for preventing altitude difficulties.

Get Travel Insurance

Before you begin your journey, it’s critical to buy comprehensive travel insurance that
Specifically covers:

  • High-altitude trekking (up to 6,000m)
  • Emergency helicopter evacuation
  • Trip delays, cancellations, or lost luggage
  • Medical expenses abroad

Permits and Documentations

The Everest Base Camp Trek requires the following government permits:

  • Sagarmatha National Park Entry Permit
  • Khumbu Pasang Lhamu Rural Municipality Permit.

These can be arranged in Kathmandu or through your trekking agency. Booking with a recognized trekking company, such as Mount Glory Treks, guarantees that all legal documentation is completed in advance, allowing you to focus only on the journey.

Mental Preparation

Trekking for more than 12 days in tough weather and lonely terrain can be mentally draining.
Prepared by:

  • Practicing meditation or mindfulness
  • Setting realistic expectations.
  • Trekking with an experienced guide and a good attitude

Essential Gear Checklist: Must-Have Items

Itinerary

We'll have an exciting flight to Lukla. Flights are sometimes scheduled to depart from Ramechhap Manthali Airport rather than TIA.

After breakfast, we will begin our trek toward Phakding. On the route to Phakding, we will observe stone walls, prayer wheels, painted mani stones, and so on. Thado Koshi village, where we will eat lunch, has a stunning view of Kusum Kanguru (6367m |20889ft.). We'll walk a while from there to Phakding.

Note: Flight to Kathmandu to Lukla will divert to Manthali Airport Ramechhap during the peak Trekking season (March, April, May, September, October, or November), which is 5 hours drive from Kathmandu. It takes around 18 minutes of thrilling flight.

After having breakfast, we will trek towards Namche Bazaar, leaving Phakding behind. We will cross five suspension bridges before reaching Namche. Walking following the pathway to Namche, we will reach Monjo village. We will get to the entrance of Sagarmatha National Park.

We will have our lunch and rest for a while in Jorsalle. Then, trekking ahead, we will see the first view of Mt. Everest from Top Danda. Overnight stay at Namche Bazaar.

Today will be an acclimatization day in Namche. We suggest that you explore Namche Bazaar. This town has a lot of Wi-Fi-enabled cafes, restaurants, souvenir shops, and gear stores. Other choices include visiting the Sagarmatha National Park tourist center, traditional Sherpa communities, Hillary School, Khumjung monastery, and the Everest Hotel.

After breakfast, we'll leave Namche Bazaar. We will trek toward Tengboche, catching glimpses of Ama Dablam, Tangboche, Lhotse Shar, Kantenga, and Thamserku. We'll stop at Phunke Tenga for lunch after following the trail. It takes a few hours to go to Tengboche. We will spend the night at Tengboche.

You can attend a prayer ceremony at Tengboche Monastery, the Everest region's largest monastery. Then we begin our journey to Dingboche, taking the Deboche, Pangboche, Somare, and Orsho trails. We'll be crossing multiple suspension bridges over Imja Khola. Overnight at Dingboche.

Take an adequate break in Dingboche to adjust to the high altitude. Today, take a short climb to Nangkartshang Peak (5,083m), which offers panoramic views of Makalu, Lhotse, and Ama Dablam. After exploring, we will go back to Dingboche for rest.

The trail continues towards Lobuche. You will be walking on an uneven, rocky path and gradually ascending. En route, we will take a small break at Thukla (4,600 m) to have lunch and cross the pass. The views of Mt. Pumori, Mt. Nuptse, Lobuche Peak, Cholatse, etc., are phenomenal along the way to Lobuche.

Today, you will start the day early and prepare to ascend to the lap of the world's tallest peak, Everest Base Camp. The path from Lobuche leads to Gorak Shep (5,140 meters/16,860 feet). You will travel along the Khumbu Glacier's lateral moraine.

During peak climbing season, you will encounter a large number of mountaineers attempting to summit Mt. Everest and other nearby peaks. The trail will be rugged and full of loose rocks, so walk with caution. Following your exploration of EBC, you will return to Gorak Shep and spend the night.

Another lengthy hiking day. Before departing Gorak Shep, we hiked to Kala Pathar, a popular viewpoint. From here, you can see Mt. Everest and many other snow-capped summits, as well as a beautiful sunrise. Later, you'll descend to Pheriche (4240m |13911ft.), passing through lonely settlements and amazing forests.

It's time to head back to Namche Bazaar. The trail descends to Tengboche. From here, take the same path back to Namche Bazaar. You'll be hiking through lush forests, across suspension bridges, and through streams. The views are great.

After a hearty breakfast in Namche, you'll start descending a steep forested path. The trek passes through deep forests and spans numerous bridges over the Dudh Koshi River. Before arriving in Phakding, you will pass through little mountain communities such as Jorsale and Monjo. The route then ascends to Lukla following the Dudh Koshi River.

Enjoying the last dramatic views of the Himalayan mountains, you will fly back to Kathmandu. The flight will be short and thrilling. Upon landing at Kathmandu airport, you will be received by our team members and escorted to the hotel.

                          Useful Information

Best Season to trek to Everest Base Camp

EBC Trek in Nepal is best experienced in the spring (March-May) and autumn (September-November). These months offer consistent weather, bright skies, and magnificent views of the Himalayan peaks. Winter trekking is doable for skilled mountaineers, but heavy snow can block trails. During the monsoon season, routes become slick and hazardous, lowering visibility and increasing risk.

                          Lukla Flight Information

Most trekkers begin their journey on the 12-day Everest Base Camp Trek by flying from Kathmandu or Ramechhap to Lukla, the gateway to Sagarmatha National Park. Lukla Airport (Tenzing-Hillary Airport) is one of the world's highest and most thrilling airports, with an elevation of 2,860 meters. Flights from Kathmandu to Lukla take approximately 30-35 minutes, but flights from Ramechhap (Manthali Airport), which is primarily used during peak seasons, take only 20 minutes. Delays and cancellations are common due to mountain weather conditions, so plan for a buffer day before and after your trek. Morning flights are more reliable due to the cleaner sky. Helicopter alternatives are available, although they are more expensive.
Regardless of the route, Mount Glory Treks guarantees that all logistics are managed efficiently with up-to-date flight schedules and travel advice.

12 Days Everest Base Camp Trek Permits

Before going to any trekking region in Nepal, it is highly recommended to have proper Permit that you have taken from Government of Nepal. For the 12-Day Everest Base Camp Trek, you need to have 2 different permits; these are Sagarmatha National Park Permit which is 3000 NPR. And Khumbu Pasang Lamu Municipality Entry Permit that cost 3000 NPR.

Note: Trekkers are not worried about the Permit, which is managed by our company, and it is included in our 12 Days Everest Base Camp Trek itinerary.

Food And Accommodation During the 12 Days Everest Base Camp Trek

During the 12-Day Everest Base Camp Trek Package, most travelers stay in friendly teahouses run by local Sherpa families. These teahouses have twin-sharing rooms with shared bathrooms and pleasant dining areas heated by a central yak-dung stove. As you climb higher, the facilities become more basic, but the hospitality remains superb.

Meals include traditional Dal Bhat, noodles, soups, pasta, eggs, and pancakes. Teahouses also serve safe drinking water, hot beverages, and optional snacks. Warm sleeping bags and some extra cash are required for maximum comfort. All these facilities are managed by Mount Glory Treks agency for your ease and safety concerns.

Note: Kathmandu accommodation before and after the treks is not included but we can arrange different accommodation services upon your request and preference with reasonable price.

Good to Know Before the 12 Days trek to Everest Base Camp

                          Mobile Network & Wi-Fi Availability

Mobile networks such as Ncell and NTC provide minimal coverage on the trail. Most teahouses (paid) offer Wi-Fi, particularly in Namche, Tengboche, Dingboche, Lobuche. However, connectivity may be slow or inconsistent at higher elevations.

                          Charging Facilities and Electricity

Charging electronics is feasible at most teahouses, however it often pays additional fees and is dependent on solar power. Bring a power bank and spare batteries for your phone, cameras and GPS gadgets.

                          Drinking Water

Bottled water is accessible, but it is both expensive and environmentally bad. To treat tap or stream water, use SteriPens, portable filters, or water purification pills. For boiled water, some teahouses will charge some extra money.

                          Currency Exchange

Nepal's rural area only accepts NRP. While in Kathmandu, make sure to convert your foreign cash (USD, EUR, GBP, etc.) into NPR. Banks and authorized money changers, particularly in Thamel, offer better exchange rates and trustworthy services. While there are many ATMs in Kathmandu, there aren't many along the route. Nepali Rupees (NPR) are commonly used in trekking zones (1 USD = current exchange rate NPR). ATMs in Kathmandu enable withdrawals of up to Rs. 25,000 per transaction for a charge.

                          Typical Day

Each day begins with an early breakfast before trekking around 5-6 a.m. After 3-4 hours of trekking, you will pause for lunch, rest for twenty minutes, and then continue for 2-3 hours in the afternoon. You are free to explore the new location once you have arrived at your destination for the day. We serve dinner around 7 p.m., followed by a briefing on the next day's plans. Evenings are spent relaxing in lodges, playing games, and socializing.

                          Guides and Porters
