Gokyo and Renjo La Trek Overview

The Gokyo Lakes and Renjo La Pass Trek is a breathtaking high-altitude journey in the Everest Region that provides a more tranquil and scenic alternative to the classic Everest Base Camp route.

This trek is ideal for travellers looking for a perfect balance of natural beauty, cultural experiences, and a challenging Himalayan adventure without the crowds of the main Everest trail.

The journey takes you through tranquil Sherpa villages, alpine forests, and glacial valleys before arriving at the breathtaking turquoise waters of the Gokyo Lakes.

One of the main highlights of this 14 Day Trek is the hike to Gokyo Ri, where trekkers are rewarded with panoramic views of Everest, Lhotse, Makalu, and Cho Oyu all in one sweeping horizon.

Furthermore, the trek winds its way towards the dramatic Renjo La Pass (5,360m/17,585ft), a challenging but rewarding crossing that links the Gokyo Valley to the more peaceful Thame region. From the top, trekkers are rewarded with some of the most pristine Himalayan scenery, including glaciers, ridges, and deep valleys.

Along the way, the Gokyo and Renjo La Pass Trekking Route passes through traditional Sherpa settlements such as Namche Bazaar, Dole, Machhermo, and Thame, providing deep cultural insight into mountain life in the Everest region. The massive Ngozumpa Glacier provides a raw, dramatic backdrop for the entire trekking experience.

Why choose the Renjo La Pass Trek in Nepal?

The Everest Region's Gokyo Lakes with Renjo La Pass Trek is ideal for hikers seeking a less crowded, more picturesque, and slightly more daring option to the traditional Everest Base Camp route.

It combines high-altitude trekking, glacier landscapes, and alpine lakes with a strong sense of remoteness, making it ideal for those seeking both challenge and peaceful exploration in the Himalayas.

Perfect for trekkers seeking a quieter Everest experience:

This route avoids the dense foot traffic of the main Everest trail while still providing world-class Himalayan views, making it ideal for those who prefer peaceful trekking environments.

Ideal for fit beginners and experienced trekkers:

The trek does not require technical climbing skills, but it does require good fitness and stamina due to the altitude gain and crossing of Renjo La Pass.

Great choice for landscape and photography lovers:

From the turquoise waters of the Gokyo Lakes to panoramic Himalayan views at Gokyo Ri, the route offers some of the most photogenic scenery in Nepal.

Best for trekkers interested in high-altitude adventure without expedition climbing:

Itinerary

Upon your arrival at Tribhuvan International Airport, Kathmandu, our team will greet you and transfer you to your hotel. Once you have checked in, you can relax or take a short walk around the city, depending on your time of arrival. Mainly today is for recovery, trip briefing, and final preparation for our upcoming Gokyo and Renjo La Pass Trek in the Everest Region.

After an early scenic flight of about 30-35 minutes from Kathmandu or Ramechhap, you arrive at Lukla and begin your trek. The trail gently descends through riverside paths, suspension bridges, and small Sherpa settlements along the Dudh Koshi Valley.

You walk for about 3–4 hours before arriving at Phakding, a peaceful village beside the river, where you spend your first night in the mountains.

Today, the trail follows the Dudh Koshi River, crossing suspension bridges, passing through forest sections, and traditional Sherpa villages. Once you pass the national park gate at Monjo, the trail starts to climb steadily, with a long, steady climb.

The final steep climb brings you to Namche Bazaar, a lively mountain town set in a natural amphitheatre of the Himalayas and your first major stop in the area.

Before moving further into the mountains, this day is designated to help your body acclimatise to the higher altitude. A quick walk around Namche provides breathtaking views of the surrounding peaks and a closer look at the traditional Sherpa way of life, so it's preferable to rest alone.

While allowing for adequate acclimatisation, you can stroll to neighbouring villages, visit viewpoints above town, or explore the local market. The day aids in your physical preparation for the upcoming elevations.

After leaving Namche behind, the trail ascends through alpine forests with expansive views of distant snow-covered peaks. As you depart from the main Everest trail and enter more serene highland terrain, the route gradually becomes quieter.

Before arriving at the village of Dole, a serene mountain stop surrounded by untamed Himalayan scenery, the path continues with steady ups and downs past small settlements and yak grazing areas.

Today, the trail continues farther into the high alpine zone, where the scenery becomes more dramatic and open. Along the way, you travel through expansive valleys, yak pastures, and tiny seasonal towns with unceasing views of the mountains.

Another significant step towards the Gokyo Valley is reached by a slow ascent to Machhermo, a serene high-altitude village renowned for its serene surroundings and unobstructed views of neighbouring peaks.

As the valley opens up towards glacial terrain and striking Himalayan backdrops, today's route enters one of the most picturesque parts of the trip. With increasing views of snow peaks, the trail progressively ascends through rocky paths and expansive alpine landscapes.

The path passes through the Ngozumpa Glacier zone before arriving at the stunning settlement of Gokyo, which is surrounded by tall mountains and situated next to turquoise lakes. This is one of the trek's main highlights.

Gokyo Ri, one of the best vantage points in the Everest region, is reached by an early morning climb up a steep ridge. You are rewarded with a broad view of the Himalayas from the summit, which includes the vast Gokyo valley below as well as Everest, Lhotse, Makalu, and Cho Oyu.

In the tranquil surroundings of glacial lakes and majestic peaks, you return to Gokyo village for rest and recuperation after spending some time at the summit.

A strenuous and rewarding day starts with a gradual ascent across the breathtaking Renjo La Pass to the trek's highest point. The reward is expansive views of the Gokyo Valley, glaciers, and Himalayan giants below, but the climb is exposed and steep.

Following a lengthy high-altitude crossing, the trail gently descends into a more tranquil valley on the opposite side before arriving at the isolated community of Lungden, where you make your home.

From Lungden, the trail gently descends through a peaceful, less-travelled valley with traditional mountain paths and expansive views of the Alps. After the high pass crossing, the route feels serene as it passes through open yak pastures and small settlements.

You arrive at Thame, a historic Sherpa village that offers a peaceful and picturesque overnight stay and is well-known for its monastery and deep cultural ties.

Today's trail offers a pleasant descent through forested paths, suspension bridges, and dispersed Sherpa settlements on the way back. As you move away from the higher alpine zone, the scenery progressively gets greener.

The path keeps going steadily until you arrive at Namche Bazaar, which is a bustling mountain centre with cosy teahouses, cafes, and expansive views of the Himalayas.

On the last day of the trek, there is a lengthy descent through the Dudh Koshi Valley, with familiar villages, suspension bridges, and forest paths along the way. As you get closer to lower elevations and warmer conditions, the route gradually levels out.

When you reach Lukla in the evening, your trekking journey is complete, and you have time to relax and celebrate your successful high-altitude adventure.

After trekking through the Himalayan peaks and valleys, a brief morning flight returns you to Kathmandu from Lukla. You are taken to your hotel upon arrival, where you have the remainder of the day to unwind, see the city, or just recuperate from the trip.

Today is the last day of your journey. You will be driven to Tribhuvan International Airport three to four hours prior to your scheduled flight. Your Gokyo and Renjo La Pass trekking adventure in Nepal comes to an end with our team's seamless and prompt drop-off.

                              Useful Information

Renjo La Pass: Location, History & Importance

The Renjo La Pass is a high Himalayan crossing in the Everest Region, at an elevation of approximately 5,360 metres. It connects the Gokyo Valley to the quieter Thame-Lungden side of the Khumbu, making it an important part of the Gokyo circuit trekking route.

Trekkers are rewarded with panoramic views of Everest, Lhotse, and Cho Oyu, as well as a vast stretch of glaciers and rugged alpine terrain from the pass's summit.

Renjo La was once part of the ancient trekking routes and was traditionally a mountain corridor for Sherpa communities and traders. In the days before tourism came to the Everest region, this was a useful crossing place for yak caravans travelling between isolated valleys. This provides the pass with a deep cultural connection to local Himalayan life and trade routes.

Today, Renjo La is one of the most popular high passes in Nepal’s network of trekking trails. It is highly prized as a less crowded alternative to the mainstream Everest routes, offering trekkers a dose of raw mountain wilderness, silence and unspoiled scenery.

The view over the Gokyo Lakes and the surrounding glacier systems is one of the most dramatic panoramic experiences in the whole Everest region and a highlight of the Gokyo and Renjo La Pass Trek.

Food during the Gokyo and Renjo La Pass Trek is basic and fresh and is made to sustain long trekking days in the Everest Region.

On the trekking days, the package includes three meals a day, and in Kathmandu, breakfast is served at the hotel, allowing you to choose your own lunch and dinner options prior to the start and end of the trek.

Teahouses along the trail offer a mix of Nepali and basic international food to fuel trekkers at high altitude, particularly around the Gokyo Lakes and the valleys surrounding it.

Accommodation During Gokyo Valley & Renjo La Pass Hike

Your journey begins and ends in Kathmandu, where you will stay in comfortable 3-star hotels that offer adequate rest and modern amenities prior to and following your trek in the Everest Region.

During the trekking days, accommodation is provided in local teahouses and mountain lodges, which are basic but clean and comfortable enough for high-altitude trekking. These stays are an essential component of the authentic Himalayan experience.

As the trail ascends towards the pristine Gokyo Lakes and the difficult crossing of Renjo La Pass, facilities gradually become more basic. Due to the remote alpine environment, rooms are simpler, services are limited, and comfort levels are lower.

Best time for the Renjo La Pass Trek with Gokyo Lake

The spring season (March to May) and autumn (September to November) are the best times for the Gokyo and Renjo La Pass Trek in the Everest Region, as the weather is stable and the mountain views are clearest.

Spring offers mild temperatures, clear skies and blooming rhododendron forests along the lower trails. The Gokyo Lakes trip is particularly scenic and colourful.

On the other hand, autumn has dry trails, cool air and some of the best panoramic views of Everest, Lhotse, Makalu and Cho Oyu from places like Gokyo Ri and the trail to Renjo La Pass.

During the winter season (December to February), the temperature drops drastically with heavy snow at higher elevations, making the pass more difficult, while the monsoon season (June to August) is characterised by rain, cloudy days and reduced visibility, not an ideal time for high mountain trekking.

Gokyo and Renjo La Pass Trek Permits

Two permits are mandatory for the trek in the Everest Region and will be checked along the trail to Gokyo Lakes and Renjo La Pass.

                              • Sagarmatha National Park Permit: NPR 3,000 per person (approx. USD 25)
                              • Khumbu Pasang Lhamu Rural Municipality Permit: NPR 2,000 per person (approx. USD 15–20)

                              Notes

                              • Permits are issued in Kathmandu or at entry points (Lukla/Namche) based on the arrangement.
                              • Fees may vary slightly based on government updates.
                              • We take care of all permits when you book a package.

                              Travel Insurance

Travel Insurance is important for all who are starting the high-altitude trekking at Everest Region to ensure safety and prevent unanticipated events. With the help of travel insurance, you can travel with security and safety.

To give yourself peace of mind, buy travel insurance that covers adventure activities such as high-altitude trekking. Furthermore, helicopter evacuation up to 6000 metres should be covered by your insurance.

                              Guide and Porter Service

Trekking in Nepal requires knowledgeable local assistance for safety and navigation in high-altitude terrain, particularly on high-altitude routes that lead to Gokyo Lakes and Renjo La Pass.

The package includes a certified Sherpa guide who speaks English to guarantee easy trekking, appropriate route management, and cultural insights all along the way. There is complete coverage for all guide-related costs, including lodging, meals, insurance, and transportation.

One guide is available for groups of up to eight hikers; if the group size grows, an assistant guide will be added for improved trail coordination.

By default, this package does not include Porter service. For added convenience, it can be added upon request. Long trekking days are made much easier and more comfortable by hiring a porter, who can usually carry up to 25 kg of luggage shared by two hikers.

How hard is the 14-day Gokyo and Renjo La Pass Trek?

The Renjo La Pass Trek in the Khumbu Region is regarded as a moderate to difficult high-altitude trek because of its elevation gain, isolated location, and difficult mountain pass crossing. Technical climbing skills are not necessary, but good endurance and physical fitness are.

Trekkers encounter steep climbs, chilly winds, and lower oxygen levels above 5,000 metres during the most challenging part of the journey, which is the ascent and crossing of the Renjo La Pass.

The continuous gain of altitude in trekking through the Gokyo Valley and around Gokyo Lakes, as well as the challenge of it all, makes it quite a feat.

Daily walking is usually 5 to 7 hours on the varied terrain of the Himalaya, which includes rocky trails and sections by the Ngozumpa Glacier.

Most fit trekkers can comfortably complete the journey with proper acclimatisation, a steady pace, and some basic trekking experience, while savouring one of the most scenic routes in the Everest region.

How do I Prepare for the Gokyo and Renjo La Pass Trek?

As previously mentioned, this 15-day Himalayan trek includes long trekking days, changing weather and crossing a major mountain pass over 5,000 metres. Preparation is the key to enjoying the trek safely and avoiding altitude problems and remote mountain conditions around Gokyo Lakes and especially the Renjo La Pass.

                              • Regularly walk, run, cycle or climb stairs in the run-up to the trek to build cardio-endurance.
                              • Long walks with a rucksack to get used to real trekking and build up some endurance.
                              • Focus on leg and core strength training to cope with steep climbs and descents.
                              • Gradually extend your walking distance to get ready for 5-7 hours of trekking each day.
                              • If possible, train at higher altitudes so your body adapts to low-oxygen conditions.
                              • Layering clothes for cold, wind and sudden weather changes.
                              • Get your trekking boots broken in before you arrive to avoid blisters and discomfort.
                              • Have basic altitude sickness awareness and be prepared to walk slowly and acclimatise well.
                              • Pack essential medication, hydration systems & energy snacks for long trekking days.
                              • Eat a balanced diet and drink plenty during training and during the trek itself.

Altitude Sickness in the Gokyo and Renjo La Pass Trek & How to Prevent It?

Altitude sickness or Acute Mountain Sickness (AMS) is a common concern on the Gokyo and Renjo La Pass Trek in the Everest Region as the trail rapidly climbs above 3,500m and reaches extreme heights near Renjo La Pass and Gokyo Lakes. This is because at high altitude, the body is trying to adapt to lower levels of oxygen.
Typical symptoms are headache, giddiness, nausea, loss of appetite, tiredness and breathlessness. If untreated, it can become worse and impact trekking safety. So prevention is more important than treatment.

                              • Avoid rapid gain in altitude, slow ascent, and a well-planned acclimatisation itinerary is essential.
                              • Take rest days at key locations like Namche and Gokyo to allow the body to acclimatise to lower oxygen levels.
                              • Drink 3-4 litres of water a day to keep your body well hydrated and avoid alcohol and smoking during the trek.
                              • Eat a high-energy diet, with carbohydrates such as rice, pasta, potatoes and soups to help maintain stamina.
                              • Walk at a steady pace, rather than fast trekking, especially on steep ascents and high passes.
                              • If you can, sleep at a lower altitude than the highest point reached during the day.
                              • Before the trek, consult your doctor and take some altitude sickness medication such as Diamox.
                              • Don’t ignore early symptoms and tell your guide immediately if you are feeling uncomfortable.
                              • Stay warm and well-rested, especially at higher camps and windy areas.

Electricity, WiFi, Water, and Cash During the Renjo La Pass Trek

Basic facilities such as electricity, internet, and drinking water are available along the trail during the High Altitude Gokyo and Renjo La Pass Journey in Nepal, but these become more limited and expensive as you ascend to high-altitude areas such as Gokyo Lakes and Renjo La Pass.

                              Electricity

Most teahouses have electricity from solar or limited local systems. Charging phones, cameras, and power banks typically costs NPR 200-500 per device, with prices rising with altitude. Charging in higher villages may be slower and more weather-dependent.

                              WiFi

WiFi is available in some lower villages, including Namche Bazaar and parts of the Gokyo Valley, but it is slow, unstable, and requires a separate payment. Costs typically range between NPR 500 and 1000 per session or data card usage, making it only appropriate for basic messaging rather than heavy use.

                              Water

Drinking water is available along the route, but it gets more expensive as you go higher.

                              • Bottled or boiled water: NPR 100-400 per bottle/cup (higher in altitude).
                              • Filtered water from teahouses is less expensive, but it is still charged. Trekkers should use water purification tablets or filters to save money and ensure their safety.

                              Cash and ATMs

ATMs are only available in Namche Bazaar, and they may not always be functional. There are no banking services once you leave Namche, so bring Nepali cash from Kathmandu enough to last the entire trek.

                              Important Note

All of these services are included in the trekking package, and the cost rises steadily with altitude due to the difficulty of transportation in remote Himalayan terrain.

                              Airport Pickup and Drop-Off

Most of our packages include airport transfers, ensuring a smooth and stress-free travel experience from arrival to departure.

When you arrive at Tribhuvan International Airport in Kathmandu, our team will greet you and transfer you directly to your hotel in the city for rest and preparation before heading into the Himalayas.

On the trekking departure day, you will be driven from your hotel to either Kathmandu or Ramechhap Airport (depending on flight schedule and season) for a scenic mountain flight to Lukla, the Everest region's gateway.

The same arrangement applies to your return flight from Lukla to Kathmandu after you have completed the trek through the Gokyo Lakes and crossed Renjo La Pass.

At the end of your journey, we will provide a final hotel pickup and transfer you back to Tribhuvan International Airport about three hours before your international flight, ensuring a smooth and organised departure experience.

Gokyo and Renjo La Pass Trek FAQs

                              • Trekkers stepping up from easier Himalayan trails frequently choose this route. Although technical climbing is not necessary, a high level of fitness is crucial due to the altitude and long walking days. Even novice high-altitude hikers can finish it comfortably and enjoy the experience if they prepare well and maintain a steady pace.

                              • The Renjo La Pass crossing is typically the most difficult part of the trip because of the high altitude and steep climb. People frequently characterise it as challenging but incredibly rewarding because the views from the summit make the effort worthwhile. Making this section manageable is largely dependent on acclimatisation and slow walking.

                              • This route is renowned for its serene paths, glacier scenery, and turquoise lakes, in contrast to the busier Everest Base Camp trail. Many hikers opt for it in order to enjoy classic Everest views from various perspectives, particularly from Gokyo Ri and high passes, while maintaining a more tranquil trekking rhythm.

                              • The majority of itineraries are planned for 12 to 14 days, depending on acclimatisation and walking speed. Without hurrying through the altitude gain, the structure provides ample time to enjoy major attractions like Gokyo Lakes, Renjo La Pass, and nearby Sherpa villages.

                              • Trekkers typically favour spring and autumn because of the more consistent weather and improved visibility. In comparison to winter snow or monsoon rain, these seasons also provide better mountain views and more comfortable trekking conditions.

                              • Most trekkers prefer to travel with a licenced guide for navigating remote high altitude terrain and for safety support in changing weather conditions. A guide adds value by sharing local culture and history and managing altitude concerns.

                              • Accommodation along the route is mixed. The lower villages have more comfortable teahouses, but the higher ones, around Gokyo and above, become more basic and simple. From village stays to isolated mountain lodges, the experience progressively changes.

                              • With options like rice, lentils, noodles, soups, potatoes, and simple international dishes, meals are typically light, fresh, and energy-focused. The food changes a little with altitude but the teahouses try to have enough variety to fuel long days of trekking.

                              • As the trek takes you to high elevations over 5,000 metres, the effects of altitude are something trekkers need to be aware of. Most itineraries allow for acclimatisation days and moving slowly will allow the body to adjust more easily, along with drinking plenty of water.

                              • As you ascend, the facilities become more limited. ATMs are primarily found in Namche Bazaar, so bringing enough cash from Kathmandu is strongly advised. Internet is available in some villages but is usually slow and not reliable for heavy use.

                              • Entry into the Everest region requires official permits, which are checked along the way. These are usually arranged prior to the trek by a registered agency, making the process easier for trekkers once the journey begins.

                              • Yes, the route is adaptable based on travel style, fitness level, and available time. Some trekkers prefer a slower pace and more acclimatisation, whereas others extend their journey to include additional viewpoints or nearby valleys for a more immersive Himalayan experience.
